Durham Cathedral, Durham

Regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, Durham Cathedral was founded in 1093 to replace an earlier church, which housed the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Today, the cathedral’s treasures include relics of Saint Cuthbert, the head of Saint Oswald of Northumbria, and the remains of the Venerable Bede. The cathedral’s library contains one of the most complete sets of early printed books in England. Stop by for a daily Church of England service, or climb the cathedral’s iconic central tower, rising to 66 m (217 ft) and offering sweeping views of the city and the surrounding area. • Absolutely beautiful place, nice walk from the city centre, cafe on site is lovely too but could do with a little bit of a better drink option, don't sell dairy alternatives which made it difficult to eat and drink but what I did get was nice, free entry in the cathedral but a donation is pushed on to you at the doors and it's recommended at about £5 each, it was pushed so much that we felt awkward even though we made a small donation anyway, this could be just the woman who was on the desk as other staff seemed lovely and helpful
  • Majestic and truly magnificent visit today while up visiting family for the holidays. Truly remarkable and overwhelming structure. Weather was mild and the first time we’d be able to visit. Great history and we had a fabulous guide who took us round. The work that has gone into this place is incredible. Great place to visit and nice staff. Thank you Durham. Truly magnificent
